Job description
About the role
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to develop integrated sensors and mixed‑signal readout ICs for flexible electronic skin (Smart Skin) that will enable tactile intelligence in advanced robotics. The position is based in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at TU Delft.
Key responsibilities
- Design, simulate and layout low‑power mixed‑signal ICs for large tactile sensor arrays.
- Develop analog front‑ends, high‑resolution energy‑efficient ADCs and local data‑processing/multiplexing blocks.
- Explore circuit architectures such as local digitisation, event‑driven or asynchronous readout.
- Integrate CMOS chips with flexible or stretchable capacitive, piezoelectric or piezoresistive sensor arrays.
- Take designs from architecture through tape‑out, characterisation and electrical measurement.
- Validate solutions at the robotic system level and co‑supervise MSc/PhD candidates.
- Publish research results in leading conferences and journals.
Required profile
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Microelectronics, Integrated Circuits or a closely related field.
- Strong foundation in analogue IC design, including MOSFET physics, amplifiers, voltage references and frequency compensation.
- Experience designing mixed‑signal circuits such as ADCs, DACs, comparators or oscillators.
- Proficiency with IC design and simulation tools (e.g., Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre).
- Experience with system‑level modelling (MATLAB/Simulink, Verilog‑A) and ability to translate sensor requirements into circuit architectures.
- Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
Required skills
- Analog IC design
- Mixed‑signal circuit design
- Cadence Virtuoso and Spectre
- MATLAB / Simulink
- Verilog‑A
- MOSFET physics and amplifier design
- Voltage reference and frequency compensation techniques
- ADC/DAC design
What we offer
- Access to state‑of‑the‑art IC design tools, measurement equipment and fabrication facilities.
- Collaboration with leading experts in sensors, microelectronics and robotics.
- Opportunities to publish and co‑supervise graduate students.
