Head of Engineering, Adyen Protect

About the role

Adyen Protect is an ML-first product suite that detects and mitigates payment fraud in real-time across billions of transactions. As Head of Engineering you will lead four high-impact engineering teams, shaping the technical roadmap and ensuring world-class protection for Adyen’s global merchants.

Key responsibilities

• Define and execute the technical roadmap, aligning machine-learning capabilities with evolving e-commerce and regulatory needs.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams to build scalable infrastructure for model training, real-time scoring and automated A/B experimentation at millisecond latency.
• Establish engineering standards to deliver resilient, low-latency fraud detection systems that handle massive data volumes without downtime.
• Partner with product, risk and business stakeholders to translate complex fraud patterns into robust technical features and automated mitigation strategies.
• Mentor and grow a high-performing organization of engineers and managers, fostering an inclusive culture of rapid prototyping, ethical AI and continuous learning.
• Engage with the world’s largest merchants to understand their risk profiles and provide granular control and insights.

Required profile

• Deep enthusiasm for the full machine-learning lifecycle, from data engineering to model deployment and monitoring.
• Proven track record leading complex engineering organisations, including manager-of-managers experience in high-growth fintech or SaaS.
• Strategic problem-solver who balances immediate fraud mitigation with long-term reduction of false positives.
• Technically fluent, comfortable discussing distributed systems, data pipelines and real-time processing architectures.
• Excellent collaborator who can bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders.
