Internship in Fluid-Structure Interaction – Hydrodynamics

About the role

Damen Naval is advancing ship design through advanced computational analysis, focusing on fluid‑structure interaction for naval vessels. The internship offers the chance to work on cutting‑edge research topics such as wave‑induced load predictions, fatigue assessment, and coupling CFD with structural models.

Key responsibilities

• Select or develop analysis methods and engineering tools needed for the research.
• Plan and execute the research project from day one.
• Deliver an in‑depth analysis of the research problem and communicate results to other departments.

Required profile

• Top‑tier Master’s student in Mechanical, Marine, Aerospace Engineering, Naval Architecture or a related field.
• Passionate about ships, naval engineering and military hardware.
• Independent, curious, analytical and proactive.
• Permanent EU citizenship and passport; security screening required.

Required skills

• Familiarity with hydrodynamics and ship structures (fatigue, strength, ocean waves, ship motions, statistics, probability).
• Basic experience with simulation tools (CFD, Comflow, Seacal, Pretti, Ansys Aqwa, Ansys Workbench/APDL, Femap, LS‑Dyna) or strong motivation to learn.
• Proficient in programming (Python, MATLAB).
• Effective stakeholder communication and project planning.
• Fluent in Dutch and English (written and verbal).
