Senior Occupational Safety & Process Safety Management Specialist

About the role

Johnson & Johnson is seeking an experienced Occupational Safety and Process Safety professional to join its EHS team in Leiden. The role co‑leads safety programs across laboratories, production, engineering and capital projects, ensuring regulatory compliance and continuous improvement in a biotech environment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement and maintain occupational safety and process safety management programs, policies, procedures and standards.
• Co‑lead process hazard analyses, HAZOPs, LOPA studies and manage change activities.
• Conduct workplace and process risk assessments and translate findings into technical and procedural controls.
• Strengthen safe‑work systems such as permit to work, confined space entry, hot work, lockout/tagout and contractor safety.
• Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analyses and drive corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with Dutch and international safety regulations, ISO 45001 and recognized PSM frameworks.
• Support audits, regulatory inspections and EHS reporting.
• Design and deliver training on occupational and process safety for operators, engineers and contractors.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Biology or related field; master’s preferred.
• Completed HVK qualification or equivalent senior safety qualification.
• Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in occupational and process safety within biotech, pharmaceutical, chemical or high‑hazard manufacturing.
• Fluency in Dutch and English, both spoken and written.

Required skills

• HAZOP and LOPA facilitation.
• ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 knowledge.
• HVK qualification (or equivalent).
• NEBOSH diploma or similar safety certifications.
• Experience with safety instrumented systems, ATEX, machine safety and process safety documentation.
