Staff R&D Scientist

About the role

Johnson & Johnson is seeking a senior scientist to join its IOL optics and vision science team in Groningen. The role focuses on research and development of intraocular lenses and the optical metrology needed to test them.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in the development of new medical device concepts from ideation to market.
• Lead design and development of intraocular lenses and associated optical metrology.
• Develop test methods and validation systems for lens characterization.
• Write and execute protocols, reports, and documentation of design requirements.
• Build and maintain relationships with partners, notified bodies, and expert networks.
• Monitor competitive products, industry trends, and emerging technologies.
• Contribute to IP strategy and assess external ideas.
• Lead multidisciplinary research teams and collaborate with European institutes and US R&D groups.

Required profile

• PhD in optics, physics, vision science or related field.
• At least 5 years of relevant R&D experience.
• Strong research background with proven technology development record.
• Excellent problem‑solving, communication and teamwork skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency in optical design principles.
• Experience with Zemax, OSLO or similar optical design tools.
• Expertise in optical metrology and test method development.
