Software Engineer – Edge Systems & Embedded Security

About the role

Ore Energy is developing utility‑scale iron‑air batteries to provide multi‑day energy storage for grids and data centers. We are expanding our engineering team in Amsterdam and need a Software Engineer focused on edge systems and embedded security to own the secure software and data architecture that connects our battery hardware to cloud platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop communication software for industrial edge gateways, enabling secure connectivity between BESS containers, EMS/SCADA systems, field devices and cloud services.
• Implement industrial communication protocols (IEC 61850, IEC 60870‑5‑104, Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, MQTT) with authentication, encryption and certificate‑based security.
• Define and embed cybersecurity features across embedded software, edge gateways and cloud‑connected components, following security‑by‑design principles.
• Build secure remote‑management and OTA update mechanisms for device monitoring, diagnostics, provisioning and firmware/software upgrades.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams to validate and deploy communication software for next‑generation Battery Energy Storage Systems.

Required profile

• 4+ years of hands‑on software engineering experience in edge‑to‑cloud systems, cybersecurity and IoT platforms.
• Strong programming skills in Python and C/C++; experience with Go or Rust is a plus.
• Practical knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, MQTT, IEC 61850 or IEC 60870‑5‑104.
