Postdoc Predicting & Mitigating Liquid Copper Infiltration in Steels via Atomistic Simulations

About the role
The EU‑funded GRID4CITY project seeks a postdoctoral researcher to lead cutting‑edge investigations on liquid copper infiltration in steels and the repurposing of end‑of‑first‑life electric bus batteries for second‑life energy storage. The role is based at TU Delft and involves close collaboration with European partners.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct atomistic simulations to predict and mitigate liquid copper infiltration in steel alloys.
- Research second‑life applications of retired electric bus and In‑Motion Charging batteries, focusing on degradation, safety and performance.
- Develop digital‑twin models for battery state‑of‑health estimation, diagnostics and re‑configuration.
- Analyse the impact of battery chemistry, aging history and pack architecture on reliability and lifetime.
- Design optimal sizing and energy‑management strategies for traction‑grid‑supported high‑power charging at construction sites.
- Contribute to two pilots: a traction‑to‑building micro‑grid and mobile charging solutions for zero‑emission construction machinery.
- Support coordination of research activities across EU partners, organise meetings, and disseminate results.
- Supervise MSc and PhD students and publish findings in high‑impact journals.
Required profile
- PhD in Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Energy Systems or a related field.
- Experience with atomistic simulation techniques and battery degradation studies.
- Ability to work in an international, multi‑disciplinary research environment.
- Strong communication skills for project coordination and knowledge dissemination.
