Robot-Assisted Toothbrush IMU Validation Internship

About the role

You will join Philips Oral Healthcare R&D in Eindhoven to develop a repeatable test bench for toothbrush IMU validation using a 6-DOF robot arm, OptiTrack motion capture and sensor data.

Key responsibilities

• Commission the Jetson/ROS 2 robot and OptiTrack workflow and implement safe trajectory replay.
• Define the brush‑head TCP, calibrate robot, OptiTrack, marker and IMU coordinate frames.
• Design static and dynamic tests covering multiple orientations, motions and speeds.
• Convert recorded poses into continuous, limit‑checked robot trajectories.
• Synchronise OptiTrack and IMU data, quantify replay accuracy, repeatability and cross‑brush similarity.
• Deliver reusable software, a validated protocol and a technical report.

Required profile

• MSc student or final‑year BSc in Robotics, Mechatronics, Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Science or Data Science.
• Proficient in Python programming and comfortable working in Linux.
• Good understanding of linear algebra, 3D rotations and signal‑processing concepts.
• Independent, safety‑conscious and collaborative with strong English communication skills.

Required skills

• Python
• Linux
• ROS 2
• Robot arm control (e.g., SeeedStudio reBot Arm)
• OptiTrack motion capture
• IMU sensor handling
• Signal processing

What we offer

• Monthly allowance of €500‑€700 gross (pro‑rata for part‑time).
• Housing compensation for relocation (€300 net near Amsterdam, €255 net elsewhere).
• Travel compensation up to €192 net.
