Internship – Digital Ship Structural Hull Monitoring

About the role

Damen Naval aims to develop a digital Hull Condition Monitoring methodology that leverages the ship’s digital twin, sensor data and wave information to enable predictive and preventive maintenance. As an intern or graduate student you will contribute to the next‑generation Structural Hull Monitoring (SHM) systems and related research.

Key responsibilities

• Select or design analysis methods and engineering tools required for the research project.
• Plan, execute and manage the research assignment from day one.
• Produce a detailed in‑depth analysis of the chosen problem and document findings.
• Communicate results and conclusions to internal departments and stakeholders.

Required profile

• Master’s student in Mechanical, Marine, Aerospace Engineering or Naval Architecture (or equivalent).
• Passionate about ships and shipbuilding, independent and proactive.
• Familiar with hydromechanics, ship structures, fatigue, strength, ocean waves and ship motions.
• Good command of Dutch and English, both written and spoken.

Required skills

• Programming in Python and MATLAB.
• Experience or willingness to use CFD tools such as OpenFOAM.
• Experience with FEM tools like ANSYS, FEMAP or LS‑Dyna.
• Knowledge of statistics and probability applied to marine engineering.
