Thesis Internship – Ammonia Power System Modeling

About the role

The maritime industry seeks low‑carbon fuels, and ammonia is a promising candidate. Within the NWO‑funded AmmoniaDrive project, Damen is developing a novel power plant that combines an ammonia‑fuelled internal combustion engine (ICE) with a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). This thesis‑internship will create GT‑SUITE simulation models for both technologies to support system‑level studies of future marine power plants.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate modelling approaches for an ammonia‑fuelled ICE and an SOFC system.
• Develop GT‑SUITE models that capture performance, efficiency, operational constraints, transient behaviour and marine‑specific synergies.
• Validate models against experimental data generated within the project.
• Integrate the models into Damen’s vessel‑level simulation platform to study performance, energy management, sizing, fuel consumption and emissions.

Required profile

• Enrolled in a Bachelor or Master programme, preferably Mechanical Engineering, Naval Engineering or a related field.
• Autonomous, result‑driven and able to work full‑time on‑site in Gorinchem.
• Good command of written and spoken English.

Required skills

• Experience with GT‑SUITE modelling.
