PhD Position: Control Theory for Self-Designing Digital Twins of Transportation Systems

About the role

This PhD project focuses on developing control‑theoretic methods for self‑designing digital twins of transportation systems. The research is part of the over‑actuation approach, which embeds dense networks of tiny sensors and actuators directly into machine components to suppress unwanted vibrations.

Key responsibilities

• Design and fabricate modular actuator‑sensor units, including shaping of piezoelectric transducers.
• Develop mechanical interfaces that integrate the units with target transportation system components.
• Embed drive and sensing solutions into communication topologies for real‑time control.
• Perform experimental evaluation of the fabricated modules and validate control strategies.
• Collaborate with the ETCH research group to advance over‑actuation concepts.

Required profile

• Strong motivation for research that combines theory and hands‑on experimentation.
• MSc (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
• Interest in piezoelectric actuators and sensors, precision manufacturing, mechanical interfacing, and embedded system design.

Required skills

• Piezoelectric actuators and sensors design, manufacturing, and testing.
• Precision manufacturing techniques such as micromachining, subtractive processes, and multi‑material additive manufacturing.
• Knowledge of surface physics and adhesion of dissimilar materials.
• Design and implementation of electronic circuits, including power amplifiers, sense amplifiers, and embedded systems.
• Familiarity with control engineering, dynamics analysis, and numerical modelling of functional materials.
