Product Development Engineer – Direct Air Capture
ore-energy · Amsterdam
Job description
About the role
Ore Energy is pioneering long‑duration, utility‑scale iron‑air batteries that provide multi‑day energy storage for electricity grids and data centres. The battery’s “breathing” capability relies on sophisticated air‑processing and gas‑management subsystems. We are seeking a Product Development Engineer to lead the design, prototyping and validation of these Direct Air Capture (DAC) systems at our Amsterdam site.
Key responsibilities
- Design and size active air‑treatment, gas‑separation and humidity/temperature conditioning subsystems, performing mass‑balance and flow‑dynamics calculations.
- Select, specify and source mechanical components such as sorbents, filters, gas membranes, reactors, valves, pumps and blower systems.
- Build laboratory‑scale proof‑of‑concept units and pilot‑scale air‑handling rigs, handling all plumbing and wiring.
- Plan and execute test campaigns to assess adsorption capacity, pressure drop, regeneration behaviour and energy efficiency.
- Conduct root‑cause analysis of failures, translate data into design improvements, and document findings.
- Integrate air‑handling subsystems with cell modules, sensors and structural housings in close collaboration with mechanical, electro‑chemical and controls teams.
- Produce technical documentation including system architecture, P&IDs and validation reports.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related discipline such as Process/Chemical Engineering) with a strong focus on physical machine design.
- Hands‑on experience with Direct Air Capture, gas‑adsorption or related gas‑purification technologies.
- Proven ability to prototype, assemble and troubleshoot complex plumbing and mechanical systems.
- Excellent analytical skills for process calculations, mass‑balance and performance testing.
