Team Lead Backend Development

About the role

We are looking for a people‑oriented leader to head our backend development team. In this role you will guide a group of backend engineers, support their growth, and ensure high‑quality, scalable solutions for our news platform.

Key responsibilities

• Coach and mentor backend developers, conducting performance reviews and career planning.
• Maintain long‑term employability and growth of the team, both individually and collectively.
• Collaborate with the News Area Manager and other team leads to balance team structure and resources.
• Participate in technical discussions on architecture, APIs, data handling, scalability and overall technical direction.
• Lead recruitment, onboarding and off‑boarding of permanent and freelance backend engineers.
• Identify and resolve performance or team‑dynamic challenges.
• Promote knowledge sharing across backend, mobile, and web teams.
• Foster a culture of ownership, feedback and continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Proven experience in a leadership or coaching role within software development.
• Senior backend expertise with strong knowledge of architecture, APIs, data and scalability.
• Comfortable working in an Agile environment.
• People‑focused leadership combined with a results‑driven mindset.
• Excellent at guiding professionals and having meaningful development conversations.
• Motivated to impact technical and organizational direction at the News Area level.
